Global Ethic

World Religions

As a peaceful co-existence of people, nations, and states
often breaks down because of conflicts between the different religions, the GLOBAL ETHIC BEAR is dedicated to this subject.

"Global Ethic" means that the big world religions have a lot of
basic rules in common. Delegates of all religions met at the
Parliament of the World Religions in Chicago in 1993.
There they summarized the common messages in a
Declaration Toward a Global Ethic.
The Global Ethic Bear shows the four basic directives
of this declaration spreading like rays from the
circular arrangement of the seven main world religions.

Have respect for life!
That means commitment to a culture
of non-violence and respect for life
(Please read the interpretation of the special
"Respect for all life" bear at www.united-buddy-bears.com)

Deal honestly and fairly!
That means commitment to a culture
of solidarity and a just economic order

Speak and act truthfully!
That means commitment to a culture
of tolerance and a life of truthfulness

Respect and love one another!
That means commitment to a culture
of equal rights and a partnership between men and women

These explanations are taken from the brochure
"WORLD RELIGIONS - UNIVERSAL PEACE - GLOBAL ETHIC"
(available at www.global-ethic.org,
where you find more information about GLOBAL ETHIC)

No peace among the nations
without peace among the religions

No peace among the religions
without dialogue between the religions

No survival of our globe without a global ethic
accepted by religious and non-religious people

These are the theses that Prof. Hans Küng puts at the
beginning of his reflections about a global ethic.
It is not intended to create a new religion with global ethic;
it is much more the effort to identify and emphasize the similar
thoughts that all religions have in common, in order to enable
and support the dialogue between the religions.
Without this dialogue a peaceful co-existence is not possible.

Prof. Küng
writes at the introduction of the brochure mentioned above:
From my own experience I know all the dark sides of the
religions - the Christian religion as much as all the others.
Up to the present day religions have often played a fatal role
in many conflicts all over the world.
However, I also know the bright side of the religions: As
doctrines and ways of salvation they can provide a sense of
purpose and can be patrons of peace and reconciliation. They
can provide ethic standards and personal orientation for people
of our days.

Our modern society is increasingly characterized by a lack of
orientation which is mainly due to a lack of an education for
young people which gives them a sense of purpose.
Thoughtlessness, an increase in crime rates, and more violence
are the results. In our pluralistic society it is becoming
increasingly difficult to acknowledge a universally binding formula
for all people in a single religion, philosophy, or ideology.
The "Project Global Ethic" aims to show that the religions of this
world can only contribute to peace if they think about what they
already have in common. Even non-religious people should
accept that the commitments indicated above are essential for a
peaceful co-existence, not only for people of different nations,
but for life in the smallest community as well.
The basic thought is the same as I've already mentioned in my
reflections about the Golden Rule: we have to get this way of
thinking into our standards of education as well as giving an
example in our own in our daily lives.
